I'm proud to release my 16th album via Bandcamp – Remnants From A Lost Time is now available.

27.07.16 – Remnants From A Lost Time

I’ve been intending to make a more ambient album for some time. I started thinking about how nature evolves, preserves, protects and destroys, and what kind of music could work with that concept. Firstly, I set myself some specific restrictions in which to work – no drums or percussion, no crazy bass lines and distinctive lead riffs. I wanted to make something expansive and flowing, with an organic feel to it. Something more exposed, raw and spontaneous.

Our emotions often feel at one and in-tune with the natural world around us, so I wanted to make something that might feel right to listen to when out walking through woodlands or countryside, just as much as it may be something more personal and reflective – and reflection is something we do more easily when we have that natural open space just to ourselves; those moments where we can experience a calm sense of time passing and be at one with our thoughts and memories.

As somebody who experiences a form of synaesthesia, when I make music, I think in colours and textures. While it is unlikely to be evident to most of my listeners, for me, that association between sound and colour is a vital part of the creative process. With that in mind, for the album artwork, I set about painting some abstract art whilst listening to my own work-in-progress, which resulted in a series of pieces, which ultimately became the cover art.

Remnants From A Lost Time will be available from Bandcamp very soon... In the meantime, here is a taster from the album, Estivation.

09.09.2015 – NEW ALBUM IN THE WORKS

I will be releasing the as-yet untitled album on Bandcamp later in the year. Watch this space for updates...

12.01.2015 – SENTIENT CITY RELEASED TODAY

Explore the life of the city.  Its vibrant and dynamic sense of activity – people move at ever-increasing speed against the backdrop of its structure and stability. A fast pace and steady rhythms take us through the scenes of a life that is familiar to anyone who knows the city’s world.

But we also face the experience of what lies beneath the comfortable surface – more menacing motifs suggest the dark subcultural existence which poses a threat to our comfort and security. And the forces of command and control, developed through themes of authority and power, are ever present. Those who run the city are watching us too.

All this is resolved as we realise the city has a life of its own – possibly even something that we humble citizens can only glimpse, and never fully understand.

Sentient City is available now on Bandcamp.

10.01.2014 – SENTIENT CITY TEASERS & RELEASE DATE

Sentient City will be released via Bandcamp on 12th January. Yes, that's just a couple of days from now!

...and if that isn't enough, you can also hear one of the album's most dynamic tracks, "Enforcement Mechanism"...

Finally, Richard Hayes has kindly written some enticing new album descriptions over on the discography page.

31.12.2014 – SENTIENT CITY ARTWORK & TEASER #1

07. Colony
08. Progress
09. Earthlight
10. Origins

The full album download comes with a 4-page PDF booklet. I may look at making a CD version available in the near future, so watch this space!

17.09.14 – FUTURE WORLDS REDUX

For some time I had been mulling over the idea of revisiting some of the Future Worlds tracks. When I first started making that album in 2012, my original plan was for it to be entirely orchestral, but as usual, I got carried away with synth sounds – so the end result was a hybrid of the two styles.

I was always very pleased with the final version, but the intention of it being a symphonic album kept nagging away, so I decided to bring together the existing orchestral tracks, stripped of any synthesiser sounds, alongside other tracks reworked into purely orchestral pieces.

So it won't simply be a trumpety version of the same album; it will be more of a continued exploration of those songs, perhaps even with some unreleased Future Worlds demos worked up to suit. Stay tuned for further details and track listing.

13.07.14 – BACK INTO THE LIGHT

This week, my first album Into the Light turned 7, so I decided to reflect back on the making of that album and I've written a new blog entry all about it.

Although I had worked on half a dozen or so album ideas and demos prior to Into the Light, throughout 2006, it really wasn't until I came to make this album that all the pieces finally fitted together and I was making the kind of music I wanted to make, and was happy enough to unleash to the world, so that's why I always refer to it as my first album - prior to that, it was all a learning curve. And I'm still learning.

But hopefully you'll find this blog entry insightful, maybe even inspirational. I know I've never been as happy or creatively fired up as I was during that time, and to be, it comes through in the music - I hope you'll agree :)

The Light Dreams, Into the Light. Cover art by David A. Hardy

23.03.14 – TRACES REVIEW

There's a nice review of Traces over on this blog.

03.03.14 – TRACES OUT TODAY!

After almost a year in the making, I'm very proud to be releasing Traces, on both CD and MP3 format, via Bandcamp.

The Light Dreams Traces

Traces is a thought-provoking and reflective album, with an electro-organic soundscape formed largely from classic 80s and 90s synths.

The mood of Traces evolves from day to night and dark to light throughout the twelve textured and dreamlike pieces. There's a sense of transition in the music, with three ambient interludes intersecting the electronic groove of the abum, which explores the themes of dreams, memories and the subconscious, in a dark and cinematic fashion.

Keep an eye on the blog for various insights into the making of the album.

11.08.2013 - PRINCIPIUM MAGAZINE, NEW MUSIC

The new edition of the Initiative for Interstellar Studies™ (I4IS) magazine, Principium, features a three-page feature on my art and music. I talk about my inspirations and the making of my latest album, Future Worlds. This edition of Principium has been released to coincide with the Starship Congress event in Dallas - I'll be represented on the I4IS stand.

Principium can be downloaded for free HERE.

An interview with me also featured in the previous edition, also available to download at i4is.org

Current music projects
I am currently working on two new album projects. One will follow in the footsteps of Future Worlds and be released to promote the I4IS. The album doesn't yet have a title, though it will be inspired by space travel and aims to embrace the I4IS vision and mission statement.

The other album, much nearer completion, is called Traces and features a series of short electronic pieces which heavily use sounds from classic Korg synthesisers, the M1 and Wavestation. So far, Traces plays out like a series of dream sequences and psychological disturbances.

Short samples from both of the above albums-in-progress can be heard over on my Soundcloud page.

29.06.2013 - CALLING ALL BLOGGERS OR REVIEWERS!

If you run a music or SF blog and would like to write about or review Future Worlds, then please get in touch, as I'm looking for more online reviews of the album, which would hopefully also draw more attention to the I4IS.

07.06.2013 – BEYOND THE BOUNDARY

I'm honoured to be contributing an entire chapter to a new book by the Initiative for Interstellar Studies, Beyond the Boundary. My chapter is about the relationship between space, music and popular culture, and will hopefully feature several pieces of my artwork alongside it.

My good friend Dave Yeaman recently wrote a short story based on my album Future Worlds. It can be read here.
